To understand our history, one must accept the premise that God moves the hearts of men and women. One such heart was that of a down-island pastor, who climbed a hill in the centre of town in the ground-breaking days of Gold River, and prayed that God might provide this new village with a testimony to the saving power of His Son, Jesus Christ.
Later, other hearts were moved in response to the needs of our children. A Sunday School began in January 1969, meeting Sunday evenings in the Elementary School. In the first month attendance rose from 25 to 110!
By November of that same year, a Sunday evening worship service had begun. Leadership was provided by qualified lay-leaders, and assistance was given by a number of Missionary and Church agencies, including the Shantymen and the Nootka Mission of Esperanza.
The old Community Hall was converted to become the residence of the newly formed Evangelical Church of Gold River, later known as Christian Fellowship Church. After completing the hard work of laying a solid foundation for ministry to the community, the congregation turned to Village Missions of Canada in 1978 for its assistance in providing full-time pastoral care.
Christian Fellowship Church is an independent, non-denominational church, solely governed by the local congregation. Many and varied denominational backgrounds are represented within the congregation, providing a rich and diverse flavor to the life of the church. But all cultural and denominational practices are placed second to the centrality of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the unity of all believers.
